thanksgiving week musings

baby alpaca wool yarn. time to make something of it (child + baby alpaca below concur).

i am full of self-contradictions (and i clearly have too much fun with my bandaids):

watch the throne–new day / jay-z & kanye west (i thought ye was KILLIN it in this album):

having espn scorecenter on my phone makes me care a whole lot more about sports. example: i sat facing the tv to follow cal basketball while stuffing my face with crab at joe’s crab shack.

i need to cut my nails.

anecdotal story

just around the corner of my block lives an elderly korean man in his early 80s. i know this because he often comes to my side of the block and approaches my dad to report his age. why? cus he’s got the hots for a slightly older woman–my granma.

last friday, as i was pulling out of my garage to head on out to oakland, i see this old man (he actually looks like he’s only in late 60s or early 70s. pretty good shape for an 80 some year old) in a bright pink polo shirt. he waited for me to pull out onto the driveway, and practically forced me to give him a ride to the bus stop. it’s along the way for me, and he’s a neighbor who i kind of know. what the hell? i agree.

he climbs into my car and starts talking to me in broken english.

“i’m 82! your granma! how old?”
“oh.. uh. she’s 85.”
“ahhh! <two thumbs up> is she citizenship? i go to school. for citizenship.”
“oh.. yeah! she’s got her citizenship!”
<more thumbs up as he makes an exclamation expressing his admiration>

at this point, i start sweating about how to carry on further conversation with this slightly loony old man.

AND THEN! out of nowhere! he pulls out a mouth organ aka harmonica and starts playing for me for the remaining 2 minutes of the car ride!

// the end.

moral of the story: best way to get a ride is to ambush your neighbor on their driveway and bribe them with your harmonica skillz. also, you’re never too old to have game. clearly, my granma has more than i do at 85 years old.

one year ago…

one year ago, i was freaking tan still from hawaii. now, i am slowly working on a tan from running.
>>> hmm. will forego the photo of my tanline here.

one year ago, i only knew how to jerk, but now, i can also dougie and shuffle and whip my hair. sort of…

one year ago, i had literally just arrived in the UK. i still miss it dearly. now, i am at home in the suburbs of the silicon valley.

one year ago, i had zest and energy for what was to come. now, i’m tired of uncertainties in my life.
>>> no appropriate media to insert here.

one year ago, i enjoyed tea occasionally. now, i continue the habit of observing afternoon tea daily.

one year ago, i was looking forward to exploring england, going to india, and possibly traveling to other parts of europe! now, i look forward to going to my local library.

my life seems so much smaller now.

BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS!!

another reason why i love my local library: BOOK SALES!! 4 for $1?? how can i resist? hint: i didnt.

  1. jurassic park - michael crichton (sounds fun!!)
  2. she’s come undone - wally lamb (i saw several copies of this book and one said it was on oprah’s book club list. well, if oprah endorses it, how can i not?)
  3. deception point - dan brown (hell, 4 for $1? i’ve got 7. let’s make it even.)
  4. like water for chocolate - laura esquivel (ah, high school spanish class…)
  5. bridget jones the edge of reason - helen fielding (okay. so. this is the second time i thought i was purchasing the first book and realized the mistake that i actually bought the 2nd one, but the first time, it was with dvds. at least i now have a set of the edge of reason dvd+book?)
  6. leaves of grass and selected prose - walt whitman (which makes me regret not buying the longfellow one, but there’s one more day to the sale, and i plan on going again tomorrow!)
  7. the pocket book of short stories - um.. it’s an anthology? it’s ancient? and it’s got red rims on the pages. thuper cool
and of course, my dog disapproves of my reading…
what a lazy cur.

the mavs win!

watching this video makes me emotional

ri-DIRK-ulous! (hahahaha that word never ceases to make me giggle a little each time i think/read it)

…so, when will it be the warriors’ turn?

ON A CROCHETING RAMPAGE!!!!!!

first, a blue beanie:

then, a blue flower, but not to go with the beanie:

next, a wool beret, that it sadly too large for my head:

all while watching justice league unlimited (i kid ye not. i find hawkgirl to be an absolutely fascinating and complex character.):

these slippers on the cover are on my to-do list:

aside from the other things i SHOULD be doing (job hunting & grad program researching), i have been VERY productive. all in a good 5 days work.

conclusion: i’m ready to be a little boy’s super awesome grandparent.

intense passion…

…for my local library. MAN, I LOVE MY LIBRARY VISITS!

it smells like oil paint!

…and all i’ve done is paint a base coat of yellow ochre on my canvas. if they made oil paint a scent, i would subscribe to it.

[in case you were wondering what color "yellow ochre" is. it reminds me of vermeer for some reason]

ive also been very arts&craftsy lately aka spinster-in-the-making.

for mother’s day, i knit flowers for the matriarch and the grand matriarch.

it was fun until i realized i was having an allergic reaction to one of the yarns and a mild rash/hives started breaking out.

then i moved on to japanese-wonder-store daiso and purchased for $1.50 purse clasp and $1.50 4 sheets of diff colored felts! and 5 hours later (spread over 24 hours), i made a pouch personalized to my own usage (hole for earphones). needlework is hard–i dont know how women did it back in the day let alone in third world countries.

and last but not least, GO SHARKS! (bandwagon)

end of updates.

cue and that’s miiiiiike’s super short show!

i’m never growing up

i love cartoons maybe just a tad too much. i’ve come to the realization that i need more batman merchandise in my life. one pair of batman socks is simply not enough!!! if bank of america had batman themed checks, i would totally have been on that! but instead, i have to consider this for compensation:

disney characters + superman = awesomeness-of-batman

yesterday at the library, i also came across one of my favorite tv shows that i never got to finish because i accidentally deleted the whole thing from my hard drive just before the last 5 episodes!!

SOOOO EPIC!!

and on the other end of the spectrum, i am totally grooving to sailor moon music right now. that’s right, moon crystal power and all.

they spelled jerry bruckheimer wrong.
